The Sphinx of the Backyard Pool
Lily loved summer evenings. The air smelled like sunscreen and cut grass. The fireflies blinked like tiny stars floating in the garden. But her favorite part was the family pool—a blue rectangle that sparkled under the moonlight.
One night, something extraordinary happened. Lily swam to the shallow end and noticed the water glowing. Soft golden light rippled outward from the deep end. Curious, she swam toward it.
There, resting on a magical floating lily pad the size of a dinner table, sat a sphinx. But not a scary one like in books. This sphinx had emerald-green fur, eyes like twinkling sapphires, and a friendly smile. Wings like butterfly petals folded gently along her sides.
"Hello, Lily," the sphinx said. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to swim at midnight."
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"Magic pools attract magical creatures," the sphinx purred. "My name is Cleopatra. I guard this pool's wonder. But I need your help."
The sphinx explained that the pool's magic was fading because children had stopped using their imagination there. They just swam and played games without dreaming. The sphinx needed to find a way to rekindle the magic before the next full moon.
Lily looked around. Her dad's old work cable lay coiled near the fence—leftover from fixing the pool filter. An idea sparked in her mind.
"What if we use that cable?" Lily pointed. "We could tie it to something magical... like the old oak tree over there. Make it a connection between the pool and something ancient and wise."
Cleopatra's eyes shone brighter. "Brilliant! You see with your heart, not just your eyes."
Together, they wove the cable around the oak tree and the pool's edge. As Lily wrapped the last loop, golden sparkles flowed from the tree into the water. The sphinx nodded approvingly.
"Imagination creates connections," Cleopatra said. "Like your cable connects tree to pool, wonder connects magic to reality. Never stop dreaming, Lily."
The sphinx touched Lily's forehead with her paw. A warm, tingly feeling spread through her. That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of sphinxes and glowing pools, her heart full of magic.
Every summer after, whenever Lily swam in that pool, she felt a little extra sparkle in the water. And sometimes, just sometimes, she'd see emerald-green wings reflected in the ripples, reminding her that magic exists for those who believe.
