The Sphinx of the Backyard Pool

Lily flopped onto her inflatable flamingo, staring at the bright blue sky. It was the hottest day of summer, and she had spent hours floating in circles around her backyard pool.

"I'm so bored," she sighed, splashing water with her toe.

Her eyes landed on the palm tree swaying gently in the corner of the yard. Its fallen fronds lay scattered like forgotten treasure. An idea sparkled in her mind.

Lily scrambled out of the pool and gathered the biggest palm fronds she could find. She wove them together, creating something mysterious and grand. A body. A head. Wings. Paws.

When she stepped back, a small sphinx sat at the edge of the pool, its palm-leaf face gazing wisely at the water.

"Hello there," Lily whispered.

To her surprise, the sphinx's woven mouth seemed to smile. "Hello, young builder," it rumbled, like wind through palm leaves. "I am Palm, the Guardian of Pools."

Lily gasped. "You're alive!"

"I am as alive as your imagination makes me," Palm said. "Come. Let's swim."

They spent the afternoon diving for pearls (which were really just shiny pebbles Lily had thrown in), racing dragons (her inflatable flamingo and rubber ducky), and discovering sunken cities (the drain at the bottom).

"Why did you make me?" Palm asked as the sun began to set.

Lily thought about it. "Because I was bored. Because I wanted magic. Because..." She paused. "Because I was lonely."

Palm's woven paw patted her hand. "The greatest magic comes from loneliness. It makes us create friends we never knew we needed."

That night, Lily's mom called her inside. As she dried off, she looked back at her sphinx, still sitting faithfully by the pool, guarding it until tomorrow.

Lily learned that summer day that magic wasn't something you found. It was something you made, with nothing but a palm frond, a pool, and a little bit of heart.
