The Sphinx of Sunset Beach

Maya's summer was supposed to be *vibes only*—endless beach days and zero social anxiety. Instead, she was stuck at her cousin's quinceañera prep camp, sweating through another humiliation session.

"Your posture screams insecurity," Tía Rosa announced, then gestured to the massive stone sphinx statue they'd dragged onto the patio for "aesthetic energy." "Channel some mystery. Be like the sphinx—enigmatic, untouchable."

Maya rolled her eyes so hard it actually hurt. The sphinx had been inherited from some eccentric great-aunt and now dominated every family photo like a creepy mascot.

Things got interesting when Santiago, the *padel* coach from the resort next door, wandered over. He was beautiful—like, distractingly beautiful—and suddenly Maya understood why people did stupid things for crushes.

"Who's up for some *padel*?" he asked, gesturing toward the court. "We need a fourth player."

Maya's hand shot up before her brain could process the social suicide she was committing. She'd never played *padel* in her life. Her cousins exchanged knowing smirks.

The game was a disaster. Maya's racket felt like a foreign object, and she spent most of the time diving for balls she never reached. Meanwhile, Santiago moved with ridiculous ease, laughing at her terrible form but in a nice way?

Then came the worst moment—her cousin's golden retriever, Bear (yes, really), burst onto the court chasing a squirrel. Maya tried to *bear* the embarrassment with dignity, but tripped over the dog and face-planted spectacularly.

Santiago helped her up, smiling. "You know," he said, "my friends and I are going *swimming* at the cove later. The one past the rocks. You should come."

Later that night, Maya sat by the sphinx statue, applying ice to her bruised knee. The creature's stone eyes seemed to mock her—enigmatic and untouchable? Yeah, right.

But then her phone buzzed. A message from Santiago: *Still on for tomorrow? Bear can come too.*

Maya grinned. Maybe the sphinx wasn't the only one who could be mysterious. Maybe disaster was just part of being young, and vulnerability was its own kind of strength.

She texted back: *only if you're ready to lose again.*
