The Sphinx of Sunset Bay

Lila loved **swimming** in the gentle waves of Sunset Bay, where the water turned the color of peach jam every evening. One Tuesday, while doing her favorite backstroke, she spotted something glittering near the old dock.

It was tiny—no bigger than a seashell—but it had the head of a cat, the wings of a dragonfly, and wise eyes that shone like tiny stars.

"I'm a **sphinx**," the little creature said, its voice sounding like wind chimes. "And I'm in quite a pickle."

Lila treaded water, her heart fluttering like a caught fish. "What kind of pickle?"

"The fishing kind!" The sphinx pointed one delicate claw toward a thick gray **cable** snarled around its back leg. "It's from an old shipwreck. I've been stuck for three hundred years."

Lila swam closer. The cable was wrapped tight, but her fingers were strong from years of climbing the oak tree in her backyard. Gently, she worked the heavy rope loose.

"Thank you!" The sphinx did a happy spin, sprinkling **orange** sparkles across the water. "You're very brave. Most children would have been afraid."

"I wasn't afraid," Lila said proudly. "My mom says courage is just love doing something scary."

The sphinx's eyes grew wide. "That is exactly right!" It fluttered closer. "You've earned something special. This is a **vitamin** for your imagination—magic dust that will help you dream big adventures forever."

The sphinx blew a handful of golden dust into Lila's palm. It tingled, like when your foot falls asleep but sweeter.

"Use it whenever you feel stuck," the sphinx whispered, rising toward the darkening sky. "And remember—kindness is the strongest magic of all."

That night, Lila dreamt she could fly. When she woke up, there was a tiny orange feather on her pillow.

She kept it forever, in a special box with her other treasures. And every time she went swimming after that, she kept one eye open for magic.

Because Lila learned something wonderful that day: the world is full of secrets, waiting for brave and kind hearts to discover them.
