The Sphinx of Sunflower Park
Leo's fingers tapped the glowing screen of his iPhone as he sat on the park bench, lost in a world of videos and games. The sun warmed his back, but he didn't notice the birds singing or children laughing nearby.
"Hello, young friend," a rumbly voice echoed.
Leo looked up. His eyes went wide. Perched on the jungle gym was a magnificent sphinx—the golden lion body of ancient stories, with wise human eyes and feathered wings folded at its sides.
"I am the Sphinx of Sunflower Park," the creature said, its tail swishing gently. "I've watched you visit every day, always staring at that little box in your hand. But today, something magical is happening."
The sphinx tilted its head toward the baseball diamond where kids were playing. "Your friend Mia keeps looking this way. She's been waiting for you to join the game."
Leo felt a pang in his chest. Mia had been his best friend since kindergarten, always waving at him from second base while he sat on his bench. But his iPhone games felt easier—no rules to remember, no fly balls to miss.
"True friendship," the sphinx continued, "is like a riddle. The answer isn't in your pocket. It's out there, in the moments you share." Its wings shimmered like rainbows. "But I can help you see."
The sphinx blew a handful of sparkling dust that smelled like sunshine and bubblegum. When the sparkles cleared, Leo saw something amazing—baseball wasn't just a game anymore. The diamond glowed with magic. Each position showed a floating image: Mia at second base looked like a warrior princess, the pitcher like a wizard casting spells, the outfielders like guardians protecting their kingdom.
"Everyone has a role," the sphinx whispered. "Even you."
Leo's iPhone buzzed with a notification, but for the first time, he didn't care. He stood up, the magical image fading but the feeling remaining. Mia saw him and waved, her smile brighter than any screen.
"Leo! We need a shortstop!" she called.
The sphinx nodded approval. "Some riddles answer themselves."
As Leo ran toward the diamond, the sphinx dissolved into golden sparkles, leaving behind only a single baseball in the grass where it had sat. Leo picked it up—perfect, smooth, full of possibility.
That afternoon, he caught three pop flies and made two new friends. And when he walked home, his iPhone stayed deep in his pocket. Some adventures, Leo discovered, couldn't be captured on any screen.
