The Sphinx of Summer
Maya's heart hammered against her ribs as she stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The annual end-of-school pool party. The ultimate social battlefield. And she was about to cannonball into it with spinach stuck in her teeth.
She'd eaten it at lunch, thinking she was being all healthy and mature, trying to reinvent herself over summer break. Now she could feel the green flecks mocking her every time she smiled.
"You coming in or what?" called Jordan, the Sphinx of their grade. That was Maya's private nickname for her—Jordan sat at the back of every class, mysterious and unreadable, like she knew everyone's secrets but never spoke a word. Her golden eyes watched Maya now, unreadable as ever.
Then there was Marcus, the self-proclaimed bull of the sophomore class, currently doing cannonballs that displaced half the pool's water onto innocent bystanders. He caught Maya's eye and smirked. "What's the matter, May? scared you'll mess up your perfect attendance record?"
Her friends were already in the pool, gesturing for her to join. This was it. The moment. Could be the start of her summer transformation, or another memory to cringe about at 3 AM.
Maya dropped her towel. She wasn't swimming laps today—she was diving in.
She hit the water perfectly, surfacing to find Jordan floating nearby. "Not bad," Jordan said, actual words leaving her lips for maybe the first time ever. "You have something in your teeth, by the way."
Maya froze.
"Kidding," Jordan grinned, and it transformed her whole face. "But seriously, you should've seen Marcus's face when you did that dive. He's been trying to get your attention all year."
The revelation hit harder than any cannonball. Marcus, bull-headed and obnoxious? Her? Jordan seemed to read her mind. "Sometimes the loudest ones are just trying to be heard. Maybe give him a chance?"
Maya looked across the pool where Marcus was pretending not to watch them. Maybe reinvention wasn't about becoming someone new. Maybe it was about seeing the people around you differently.
She wiped her teeth anyway. Just in case.
