The Sphinx of Summer
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The sweet sixteen playlist blasted Cardi B while kids cannonballed into the crystal blue **water**. Her curls were secured in what felt like three hours' worth of protective styling—her mother's voice echoing: "You're not getting those wet, do you know how long it takes?"
"Maya! Jump!" screamed Tiffany, the birthday girl, doing something that looked like failed synchronized **swimming**.
"I'm good!" Maya yelled back, her heart racing. Behind her, in Mrs. Davidson's garden, a stone **sphinx** stared blankly at the chaos, its painted chipped wings catching sunlight. Maya felt weirdly connected to it—ancient, out of place, just watching everyone live their best lives.
"Hey."
Maya jumped. Carlos. The Carlos. The one who sat behind her in AP Bio and somehow always smelled like sandalwood and confidence.
"You gonna hide behind the sphinx all night?" He grinned, water dripping from his hair. (His hair. That he could just wash and go. That would dry and still look amazing.)
"I'm not hiding," Maya lied. "I'm... appreciating the garden art."
Carlos laughed. "Nice. You know what that sphinx represents?"
"Riddles?"
"Wisdom. Secrets." He stepped closer. "Also, Tiffany's mom got it at Home Depot for fifty bucks."
Maya snorted before she could stop herself.
"Your hair looks incredible, by the way," Carlos said softly. "The way you styled it." Something in his voice made Maya's stomach do that fluttery thing that only happened in romance novels.
"Thanks." She touched her coils. "But, like, my mom would literally kill me if I messed this up."
"So don't." Carlos's eyes lit up. "Come on." He led her around the pool, past the sphinx, to where Tiffany's little brother had set up a slip-n-slide earlier.
"Watch this."
He sprinted, slid, and—splash!—landed perfectly in the shallow end. Not a drop of water touched his hair.
"Skill," Maya said, impressed.
"Your turn."
Maya hesitated. Her hair. The effort. The what-ifs.
But Carlos was watching, and Tiffany was shouting her name, and the sphinx seemed almost to be daring her.
"Fine."
She slid, screaming, and hit the **water** perfectly—hair intact.
Carlos high-fived her. "Told you. Sphinx approved."
Maya laughed, actually laughed, and something inside her uncurled. Maybe she didn't have to dive in headfirst. But she could still splash.
And that was enough.
