The Sphinx of Summer
The pool deck was basically a social minefield, and Maya felt like she'd stepped on every single one. Everyone else seemed to know exactly how to lean against the fence, who to talk to, how to exist without looking like they were overthinking every micro-movement. Meanwhile, Maya was clutching her towel like it contained the secrets to not embarrassing herself.
"You good?"
Maya nearly jumped out of her skin. Jake from English stood there, twirling a padel racquet between his fingers like it was no big deal. He had that infuriating ability to look effortless in everything, while Maya was out here fighting for her life just to stand normally.
"Yeah," she said, voice doing that weird high-pitched thing. "Just. You know. Observing."
"The pool's not gonna bite you." Jake nodded toward the water, where people with goldfish tattoos and actual confidence were splashing around like they owned summer. "Unless you count that one guy who definitely thinks he's a shark."
Maya's laugh came out as a weird snort. Smooth.
Then she saw her. Chloe in her orange bikini, holding court near the diving board like she was the final boss of the summer. Chloe caught Maya looking and raised one eyebrow—enigmatic, judgmental, posing an unspoken challenge like the Great Sphinx demanding an answer Maya didn't have.
"What's her deal?" Maya asked before she could stop herself.
"Gatekeeper," Jake said, stepping closer like he didn't care about the hierarchy at all. "If she decides you're cool, you're in. If not..." He shrugged. "Welcome to being a background character."
Maya's stomach did flips. "Great. I'm terrible at riddles."
"You don't have to solve her." Jake held out the padel racquet. "You just have to stop caring about the answer." His grin was honest, no posturing. "Wanna play? I promise to be equally bad."
Maya looked at Jake, then at Chloe, then back at Jake. The sphinx's riddle only had power if you cared about getting it right.
"Yeah," she said, taking the racquet. Her fingers brushed his and she pretended her heart didn't skip. "Let's be terrible together."
And as they walked to the court, Maya caught Chloe watching them, actually confused for once. For the first time all summer, Maya wasn't the one who didn't get the punchline.
