The Sphinx of Social Media

Maya's thumb hovered over the post button, heart pounding like a bass drop at a homecoming dance. She felt like a total spy, lurking through her ex-best-friend's Instagram stories at 2 AM, but she couldn't help herself. The FOMO was real, and apparently, so was her stalking habit.

The final screenshot of their group chat—minus her—glowed on her phone: That's what happens when you're too busy with your "new friends" to hang with us.

Maya threw her phone across her bed like it was on fire. Outside, lightning cracked the sky, illuminating her poster-covered walls in dramatic flashes. Perfect. The weather matched her mood exactly.

Then her phone buzzed.

Unknown number: Saw what happened. Want to talk?

Maya's stomach did that thing where it feels like you just dropped 50 feet on a rollercoaster. Was this some weirdo? A catfish? Her mind spiraled through worst-case scenarios like she was binge-watching a true crime documentary.

Unknown number: It's Alex. From that escape room birthday party last month? You solved the sphinx riddle when none of us could.

Alex. The cute one with the galaxy-painted nails who'd watched her figure out the ancient Egyptian puzzle while everyone else stood around being clueless.

Maya: How'd you get my number?

Alex: I have my ways 😉 But seriously, those girls you called friends? They've been talking behind your back since October. I overheard them at the food court.

The lightning outside flashed again, but this time it felt different. Like a movie montage moment. Maya realized she'd been stressing over losing fake friends when real ones might be out there waiting.

Maya: You think they're talking about me right now?

Alex: Probably. But I'm not. Want to grab boba tomorrow and talk about literally anything else?

Maya typed her response with genuine smiley eyes for the first time in weeks. The sphinx had taught her that sometimes the hardest riddles have the simplest answers. And sometimes, what looks like the end is just a plot twist leading to something better.

Outside, the storm finally broke.
