The Sphinx of Silver Lake

Lily was running as fast as her feet could fly, the old charging cable trailing behind her like a sparkling ribbon. It was her dad's cable from years ago - thick and braided and golden in the sunlight. She clutched the iPhone he'd given her - an old model, but perfect for her adventures.

She reached Silver Lake just as the sun began to dip behind the hills. The water was smooth as glass, reflecting oranges and pinks and purples. Lily stopped running, breathing hard, and dipped the end of the cable into the lake.

"I summon a friend," she whispered, pretending to be a wizard.

The water began to shimmer. Golden light rippled outward from where the cable touched the surface. Then, rising from the depths, came the most beautiful creature Lily had ever seen.

It was a sphinx - but not like in the storybooks. This sphinx was small enough to hold in Lily's hands, with paws made of tiny pearls and wings like dragonfly wings. Her fur shimmered like liquid sunshine.

"You summoned me?" the sphinx asked, her voice like water chimes. "I've been waiting in this lake for so very long."

"I-I didn't think it would work," Lily stammered.

The sphinx laughed - a sound like rain on a tin roof. "Magic works when you believe it will. And your iPhone - that glowing mirror in your hands - it carries wishes from children's hearts. I felt yours."

Lily showed the sphinx her phone, opening her favorite app - one filled with pictures of oceans and mountains and forests she'd never visited. The sphinx's eyes grew wide with wonder.

"Oh, what beautiful worlds!" the sphinx cried. "Show me more!"

For an hour, Lily sat by the water, sharing her phone screen with her new friend. The sphinx had been trapped in the lake for a hundred years, placed there by a lonely wizard who wanted someone to talk to. Now, through Lily's iPhone, she could see the whole world.

But the sun was setting, and the sphinx grew translucent.

"I must return to the water before moonrise," she said sadly, "or I'll disappear forever."

"Can't you come with me?" Lily asked.

The sphinx shook her head. "But you can visit me anytime. Just bring your cable, touch it to the water, and I'll hear your call. And Lily - thank you for showing me that the world is full of wonders, even from a small screen."

The sphinx touched Lily's iPhone screen with one pearl paw, leaving behind a single water droplet that didn't roll off. Then she dissolved into golden light and slipped back beneath the surface.

Lily walked home slowly, no longer running. On her screen, the water droplet remained, glowing faintly. And sometimes, when she looked at it just right, she could see the sphinx smiling back.

She'd made a friend that no one else could see - and sometimes, the most magical adventures happen when you're just running with an old cable and an open heart.
