The Sphinx of Saturday Night
Maya checked her iPhone for the third time in thirty seconds. 11:47 PM. The party was in full swing, but she felt like a zombie moving through the motions—smiling, nodding, holding this orange soda that had gone warm an hour ago.
"You're not actually gonna play, are you?" Chloe asked, flipping her perfect hair. "Padel at midnight? That's so random."
Maya's crush, Leo, stood by the court gates. He'd challenged her earlier in that cocky way that made her stomach flip. "If you're too scared, I get it. Not everyone can handle the heat."
She wasn't scared. She was just... existing. Watching from the sidelines. Being the quiet one. But something about tonight—the fake laughter, the performative everything—made her want to break character.
"I'll play," Maya said, setting down the orange soda. "But I'm not going easy on you."
The court was dimly lit, surrounded by tipsy teenagers who formed a Greek chorus of oohs and awws. Leo was good, annoyingly good, but Maya had been playing padel with her dad since seventh grade. Every smash, every lob felt like shedding a layer of something heavy.
Game point. Leo tossed the ball. His sphinx-like grin dared her to make a move.
She didn't just hit it—she launched herself, diving for a ball that was practically gone. Her racquet connected with a satisfying THWACK. The ball sailed past Leo's outstretched arm, landing exactly where she'd aimed.
"Wait, you're actually good?" Chloe's voice cracked the hysteria.
Leo stared at her, really looked at her, for the first time all night. "Where have you been hiding?"
Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket—probably her mom wondering where she was, or another group chat spiraling without her. She ignored it. For once, she wasn't watching from behind a screen. She wasn't the zombie everyone assumed she was.
"Right here," Maya said, grinning. "Always have been."
