The Sphinx of Saturday Night

Maya stood in front of the bathroom mirror for the twentieth time, her curly **hair** frizzing in every direction despite three different products and serious prayer. It was junior year, and somehow her hair still hadn't gotten the memo that she needed to look effortless and perfect for Alex's party.

"You're not backing out," her best friend Jaya texted. "This is THE party. Everyone's gonna be there."

Maya's **cat**, Luna, wound around her ankles, purring like a tiny motor of reassurance. At least the cat didn't care about social hierarchies or whether Maya's outfit was basic or cringe. Luna just wanted treats and chin scratches – simple priorities.

The party was already packed when they arrived. The air smelled like cheap body spray and nervous energy. Maya spotted Alex across the room, surrounded by what her school called the "squad" – those effortlessly cool kids who moved through the halls like they owned the place.

Then she saw him: Tyler, standing near the stereo like he was guarding the sacred music. He'd grown what looked like a tiny **bear** cub attempt at a beard over summer break, and somehow it made him even more cute. Maya's stomach did that annoying flutter thing it always did when he was within a fifty-foot radius.

"What's up with him?" Jaya whispered, following Maya's gaze. "That beard situation is... interesting."

"Shut up," Maya muttered, but she was smiling.

Tyler caught her eye and actually waved. Maya panicked. Was he waving at her? Behind her? She turned slightly, ready to wave back casual and cool, and nearly knocked over a Solo cup tower. Smooth. Truly legendary smoothness.

The night felt like some kind of test, like she was facing a **sphinx** with impossible riddles about who she was supposed to be. Laugh too loud? Tryhard. Laugh too little? Stuck up. Stand near the wall? Antisocial. Dance? Risk looking like a dying flamingo.

Then Tyler was beside her. "Hey Maya, nice hair today."

Her hands automatically flew to her frizz. "Oh my god, I know it's a disaster—"

"No, I mean it looks cool. Natural." He smiled, and that tiny bear-cub beard suddenly seemed way less significant. "Want to get some air?"

Outside, the air was crisp and real. They talked about nothing and everything – about Luna knocking water glasses off tables, about how weird it was that everyone pretended to have their lives figured out when they were all just guessing.

"I literally cannot **bear** another hour in there pretending to be chill," Tyler admitted. "I've been sweating through my shirt since I got here."

Maya laughed so hard she snorted. "Same, actually."

Her phone buzzed – Jaya asking where she'd disappeared to. Maya texted back, "Living my best life. Don't wait up."

Inside, the party raged on with its playlists and pretenses. But out here under the streetlight, Maya finally felt like she could breathe. Her hair was still a mess. She was still awkward. But somehow, that felt okay.
