The Sphinx of Room 307

Maya pressed her back against the cold bathroom stall, hyperventilating. Again. Third time this week. The bathroom at Northwood High had become her sanctuary, her escape hatch, her personal panic room.

"You okay in there?" a voice called out.

Maya froze. It was Jordan—the one person she'd been actively avoiding since the Incident.

"Fine," Maya squeaked.

"Cool. Cool." Jordan's sneakers squeaked against the tiles. "History project. Sphinx. We need to finish it."

The Sphinx. Their AP World History partner project. The ancient Egyptian monument with the human head and lion body, posed eternally with its impossible riddle. Perfect symbol for their friendship situation.

Maya slid down to the floor, tears pricking her eyes. She and Jordan had been besties since seventh grade. Shared secrets. Passed notes. Did that whole matching friendship bracelet thing that seemed so cheesy now but had felt profound at thirteen. Then last month, everything got weird and tangled when Jordan asked Maya to help them practice asking out Chloe. Maya had frozen, said something totally awkward, and now they were here.

"Running away again?" Jordan's voice came through the door, softer now. "Ms. Patel says if we don't present tomorrow, we both fail."

Maya's chest tightened. Social anxiety was brutal enough without adding friendship chaos to the mix. Some days she felt like she was constantly running—from conversations, from expectations, from her own awkwardness.

The bathroom door creaked open. Jordan stood there, leaning against the frame with that annoyingly casual Jordan vibe.

"Look," Jordan said, "I know things have been weird. But we need to finish this Sphinx thing. And I miss my friend."

Friend. The word hung in the stale bathroom air. Maya thought about how the Sphinx's riddle was: "What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?" The answer: a human, crawling as a baby, walking as an adult, leaning on a cane in old age. But maybe the real riddle was: How do you stop running from the things that scare you?

Maya stood up, legs shaky but steady.

"I'm not running," she said, surprised by the strength in her own voice. "I'm just... regrouping."

Jordan's mouth twitched. "Regrouping. I see. Very strategic."

"I'm coming out," Maya said. "We're gonna finish that Sphinx presentation. And then we're getting boba. My treat."

Jordan's grin broke through. "Finally. I was literally about to stage an intervention."

"Please," Maya said, washing her hands at the sink, "you would've made it so extra."

"Obviously," Jordan said. "That's my brand."

As they walked toward Room 307, Maya's breathing evened out. Maybe the riddle wasn't about escaping at all. Maybe it was about finding the courage to stop running and just show up, even when showing up felt impossible.

"Hey Jordan?"

"Yeah?"

"Sorry I've been MIA."

"Weird times," Jordan said with a shrug. "But we're good. Always good."

Maya exhaled. The Sphinx of Room 307 would have to wait, but something told her its riddle had already been solved.
