The Sphinx of Room 207

Maya pressed her forehead against the cold window of the school bus, the **orange** sunset painting everything in warm gold. Her phone was at 3%, and she'd forgotten her charging **cable** at home—typical. But honestly, she needed the digital detox.

Tonight was Jordan's house party, and Maya had been agonizing over her outfit for three days. Freshman year was halfway over, and she still felt like she was wearing someone else's skin. Too loud around her friends, too quiet around everyone else.

"You're overthinking it," Jordan had said when Maya admitted she wasn't sure she was ready for 'parties.' "Just be cool, okay? Don't try too hard."

Easier said than done. Jordan made it look effortless—sliding through social situations like a **fox** through a garden gate, leaving everyone charmed and none the wiser that she was winging it too.

The bus lurched. Maya's stomach lurched with it. She thought about last year's winter formal disaster, where she'd spent the whole night in the bathroom because her anxiety had **borne** down on her like physical weight. Her mom had found her crying afterward and said, "Honey, sometimes the hardest part is just showing up."

Maybe that was the problem. She was always waiting for some sign that she belonged instead of just... assuming she did.

Her phone died. The screen went black, and Maya actually felt lighter. No notifications, no performative social media, just the **sphinx**-like mystery of what tonight would actually bring. The thing about riddles wasn't solving them—it was learning to sit with not knowing.

"Hey." Jordan slid into the seat beside her. "Nervous?"

"No," Maya lied, then laughed. "Okay, yeah. A little."

"Me too." Jordan bumped her shoulder. "But we'll figure it out. Together."

The bus rolled toward Jordan's subdivision. Beyond the glass, the world kept moving, indifferent and infinite. Maya realized that was exactly the point—nobody was watching as closely as she thought they were. She could just... exist.

"I'm glad you came," Jordan said softly.

"Me too," Maya said, and for the first time, she actually meant it.
