The Sphinx of Room 204
Leo moved through the hallways like a fox—sly, quick, always three steps ahead of everyone else. He was the kind of guy who could charm his way out of detention, talk teachers into extending deadlines, and somehow still have time to perfect that effortless hair-flip thing that made every girl in homeroom forget their own names.
I was NOT that girl. I was the girl who accidentally knocked over the science fair display in seventh grade. The girl whose social anxiety manifested as involuntary charisma black holes. The girl currently staring at Mr. Henderson's classroom goldfish while avoiding eye contact with literally everyone.
"You know," Leo said, sliding into the desk beside me, "Bubbles looks like she's plotting world domination."
I jumped. "Bubbles?"
"The goldfish." He grinned, and my stomach did that embarrassing flutter thing. "She's got that dead-eyed stare. Like she knows something we don't."
"That's just the fish version of resting face, Leo."
"Or maybe she's an ancient sphinx in disguise."
I laughed. "Right. Because what every high school needs is a cryptic aquatic guard asking riddles by the lockers."
"What's your sphinx's riddle, then?" He leaned in closer, and suddenly the goldfish was very interesting. "You know—the thing you're trying to figure out?"
The question caught me off guard. Because the truth was, I WAS trying to figure something out. How to exist in a world where some people moved like foxes and others just... knocked over science displays. How to stop feeling like I was constantly solving riddles everyone else had already figured out.
"My riddle," I said slowly, "is how someone like you ends up talking to someone like me."
Leo's expression shifted. Something real cut through the charm. "Someone like you?"
"You know. Invisible. Not-fox. The kind of person who talks to goldfish because they don't judge your conversational skills."
He studied me for a moment. "Maya, I talk to you because you're the only person who doesn't look at me like I'm some kind of achievement to unlock. Plus, you actually noticed Bubbles's evil mastermind vibe. That's rare."
The bell rang, but neither of us moved.
"So," Leo said, "you want to figure out the sphinx's answer together?"
"What's the question?"
"How to survive high school without losing your soul." He stood up, slinging his backpack over one shoulder. "Meet me at the flagpole after school. We'll start with the most important riddle of all."
"Which is?"
"Who ARE you when no one's watching?"
I looked at Bubbles the goldfish, who stared back with her usual sphinx-like inscrutability. For the first time, I thought maybe I was ready to find out.
