The Sphinx of Padel Court 4

Maya's nickname in the group chat was Sphinx, which was ironic considering she had zero answers about her life. Seventeen and still figuring out who she was, while everyone else seemed to have their whole personality already cached.

That changed when Coach Blakely assigned partners for the padel unit.

"Fox, you're with Sphinx," he announced, using the names from the roster. Maya's stomach did a full gymnastics routine. Fox Miller. The boy who sat behind her in AP Bio, the one with the copper-colored hair and the effortless way of making everything look easy.

She'd been watching padel videos on her phone every night, hidden under her blanket like she was doing something illegal. Her parents still had the old cable package from 2019, which meant zero streaming, zero Wi-Fi in her room, and zero privacy when it came to watching anything.

"You know how to play?" Fox asked, spinning his racket like it weighed nothing.

"Research phase," she managed, which wasn't technically a lie. She'd researched the hell out of padel tutorials on YouTube.

The first ball he hit went straight into the fence. Fox laughed, rubbing his neck. "Okay, so we're both learning. Cool."

Something shifted. The boy everyone thought was perfect actually wasn't. Maya relaxed into the game, finding her rhythm, her movements becoming fluid. By the end of class, they'd actually managed to keep a volley going for thirty seconds.

"Not bad, Sphinx," Fox said, and for once, the nickname felt like armor instead of a mask.

That night, she messaged the group chat: New padel stats to report. Maybe the Sphinx did have answers after all — just not the ones anyone expected.

Sometimes the best way to figure out who you are is to stop trying to be mysterious and just play the game.
