The Sphinx of Miller's Basement

Maya's older brother Jordan was basically the king of Miller's Basement — the underground spot where the alternates hung out on Friday nights. Being a freshman, Maya was lucky they even let her exist there.

The setup was legendary: someone had run a thick black cable through the vents from the school's fiber network, giving them lightning-fast Wi-Fi for gaming sessions and TikTok uploads. Maya's job was holding the flashlight while Jordan and his friends argued over whose turn it was to play FIFA.

'Hey Sphinx,' Jordan tossed her a energy drink. They'd started calling her that because she'd corrected their pronunciation of 'pharaoh' during history class, and the nickname had stuck in that way older siblings have of being both affectionate and annoying at the same time.

She caught it one-handed. 'Watch it.'

That night, Tyler from the varsity soccer team came downstairs — actually came downstairs, which never happened — and sat next to her. Maya's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing it always did when he was around.

'You're Jordan's sister, right?' He was all effortless cool in his distressed hoodie. 'What are you always reading down here?'

She flipped her book closed. Ancient Egyptian architecture. Not exactly conversation starters for most people.

'The Great Pyramid,' she said, 'and the Sphinx.' She paused. 'There's this theory about hidden chambers...'

And then it happened — Tyler's eyes lit up. Not the polite nod she got from most people when she talked about ancient civilizations, but actual interest. For an hour, they talked about archeology and conspiracy theories and how the pyramids might have been built.

When Jordan's friends started teasing her about 'talking Sphinx's ear off,' Tyler defended her. 'Actually, she knows more about this than any of us. It's kinda cool.'

Later, walking home with her brother, Maya couldn't stop grinning.

'I saw that,' Jordan said. 'You and Tyler.'

'Shut up.'

'He's chill, Maya. You don't have to hide who you are around him. The Sphinx thing? It's not an insult. It means you're smart. He gets that.'

Maya looked at the ground, something warm spreading through her chest. Maybe freshman year wasn't going to be so bad after all. Maybe she didn't have to shrink herself to fit into someone else's pyramid scheme of who mattered and who didn't.

She was the Sphinx. And that was exactly who she was supposed to be.
