The Sphinx of Friday Night

Maya's room glowed with the familiar blue light of her iPhone as she doom-scrolled through party photos from last weekend. Her golden retriever, Buster, nudged her hand with his wet nose, demanding attention.

"Not now, bud," she muttered, fingers flying across the screen as she adjusted her hat in the mirror. It was a vintage beanie she'd thrifted—ironic, because it was exactly what everyone else was wearing. Curated apathy. The whole aesthetic was giving major energy, and yet it felt completely fake.

Outside, lightning flashed, illuminating the rain streaking down her window like the tears she refused to cry over Caleb's text earlier. *u up?* it had said. As if she hadn't spent the last three weeks overanalyzing his every move, as if her worth depended on being the girl who was always down to hang.

Her phone buzzed again. A group chat: "Party at Tyler's. 10 minutes. Be there or be square."

Maya's stomach did that familiar flip. Part of her wanted to stay in her oversized hoodie and watch Netflix with Buster. The other part—the part that cared about being seen, about existing in the right circles, about not becoming the girl who peaked in middle school—was already reaching for her jacket.

She paused. Something about the way the lightning made her room look like a black-and-white photograph, something about Buster's concerned eyes, something about the Sphinx-like riddle of who she actually was versus who she pretended to be online...

"Screw it," she said. She texted back: "Can't. Busy."

Buster's tail thumped against her bed frame. She tossed him the hat—he caught it mid-air, looking ridiculous and perfect, completely unbothered by the opinion of anyone.

The rain drummed a steady rhythm as she grabbed her headphones. For the first time in months, her iPhone screen went dark, and she didn't panic.

Some riddles weren't meant to be solved tonight.
