The Sphinx of Floor 42

zombiesphinxspyfox

Elena moved through the office corridors like a zombie—eyes glazed, movements mechanical, soul hollowed out by three years of corporate intelligence work. She was the company's designated spy, mining competitors' secrets while her own life eroded into gray nothingness.

Then she encountered the sphinx.

She appeared on Floor 42, a ghost in the bureaucracy—Vera, with eyes the color of storms and a smile that never quite reached them. She asked Elena questions that felt like riddles: *What do you harvest when you've forgotten what you're hungry for? Who hunts you when you're already dead inside?*

"You're the fox in the henhouse," Vera said one evening, finding Elena shredding documents in the empty copy room. "But you forgot what chickens taste like."

The words hit harder than they should. Elena's marriage had dissolved six months ago—no explosion, just the quiet recognition that she and Mark had become strangers sharing a bed. She was good at her job, exceptional really, but her excellence felt like wearing someone else's skin.

Vera touched her wrist then, electric and brief. "I can help you remember."

Three weeks later, Elena found herself in Vera's apartment, surrounded by art and plants and life. They made love with desperate intensity, Elena crying afterward without understanding why. Vera held her, stroking her hair like something precious.

"The zombie wakes," Vera whispered against her shoulder.

The company fired Elena two days later—Vera had been working for their competitor all along. But as Elena packed her box, she caught her own reflection in the darkened monitor: eyes clear, posture loose, something like anticipation humming in her blood.

The sphinx had devoured her, yes. But somehow, she'd never felt more alive.
