The Sphinx of Court Seven

Maya's first day at Vista Verde High felt like walking into a pyramid scheme where the currency was confidence and she was completely broke. The social hierarchy here was practically architectural: varsity athletes at the apex, AP kids forming the middle tier, and everyone else scattered in the rubble below.

"You okay?" Leo asked, spinning a **padel** racquet between his fingers like it was an extension of his hand. He'd found her hiding behind the gym during third period, overwhelmed by the maze-like campus.

Maya nodded, then shook her head. "I might transfer back to my old school."

"Give it a week," Leo said. "Anyway, want to see something cool?"

He led her to the far edge of the athletic fields, where an abandoned court sat behind overgrown hedges. Someone had turned the back wall into a massive mural—a **sphinx** painted in sunset colors, its enigmatic smile spanning the concrete like a challenge.

"My older brother painted that before he graduated," Leo said. "It's kind of a legend now. People say if you can solve the sphinx's riddle, you'll find your people."

"That's so cheesy," Maya said, but she was smiling.

"Yeah, well." Leo pulled a squashed **papaya** from his backpack. "Lunch?"

As they sat on the court's edge, sharing the fruit that tasted like summer itself, a storm started brewing. Purple clouds gathered overhead, and suddenly—**lightning** cracked across the sky, illuminating the sphinx's painted eyes.

"We should go," Maya said, but Leo was already reading something spray-painted near the sphinx's base.

"It's not a riddle," he said. "It says: 'The real pyramid isn't built from stone—but from moments like this.'"

They stared at each other as rain began to fall, and Maya realized something clicked into place. Not a magical transformation, just the quiet certainty that she'd found her starting point.

"Tomorrow," Leo said, standing up and offering his hand. "I'll teach you padel. It's way better than tennis."

Maya took it. "Deal."

The sphinx smiled behind them, knowing exactly what it was doing.
