The Sphinx of Court Four
Maya gripped her iPhone so hard the case creaked. Three notifications glowed on the lock screen—all from the Padel Tournament group chat.
"You coming?" "Everyone's at court four." "Don't be lame."
She'd agreed to play because her crush, Alex, had suggested it with that casual smile that made her stomach do backflips. Now, standing at the rec center entrance, Maya felt like she was about to walk into a sphinx's lair—some ancient test she wasn't prepared for.
Inside, the thwack of balls echoed. Maya spotted Alex immediately. He was wiping sweat from his forehead, laughing with his friends like he'd been born holding a padel racket. Meanwhile, Maya had spent all morning watching YouTube tutorials and still felt like she was holding a lightsaber backwards.
"Hey!" Alex waved her over. "Saved you a spot."
The game was chaos. Maya missed easy shots, tripped over her own feet, and somehow managed to hit the ball directly into the ceiling fan. But Alex just laughed, not mean-laughed, but like they were sharing some inside joke.
Afterward, everyone collapsed on the sidelines. Someone's mom had brought snacks—cut pineapple, mango, and weirdly, papaya slices. Maya had never even tried papaya. It seemed like something exotic kids ate, not people like her who got excited about Taco Tuesda
"Try it," Alex said, handing her a piece. "It's actually good."
Maya took a bite. Sweet, musky, unfamiliar. Not bad, just different. Like the way Alex looked at her when he thought she wasn't noticing.
"So," someone said from behind them. "Who's gonna bear the shame of losing today?"
Maya's stomach dropped. Her team had lost, badly.
But then Alex shrugged, totally unbothered. "We'll get 'em next time. Maya's got potential—she's got crazy aim."
Crazy aim? She'd hit everything except the ball.
Alex's phone buzzed. He checked it, then looked at Maya with that sphinx-like smile again. "Hey, some of us are gonna hit the beach tomorrow. You should come."
Her iPhone buzzed in her pocket. A notification from the group chat: "Maya's actually cool lol."
Maya took another bite of papaya. Maybe being terrible at padel wasn't the point. Maybe being yourself—awkward swings, weird fruit preferences, and all—was actually enough.
"I'm in," she said.
For the first time all day, she didn't feel like she was waiting for the other shoe to drop. Just a girl with terrible racquet skills, a phone full of notifications, and the kind of night where anything felt possible.
