The Sphinx of Court Four

My lucky hat sat crushed at the bottom of my backpack, a casualty of trying too hard. This was it: padel tryouts, and I was about to make a fool of myself in front of half the school.

"You look like a zombie," said Marisol, sliding onto the bench beside me. "Did you actually sleep last night, or just stare at your ceiling contemplating your mortality again?"

"Both," I muttered. "Also, I think my racquet is trying to escape my hand."

Across the court, the team captain—Jason, who everyone called The Bull because he charged through everything like he had something to prove—was laughing too loud at someone's joke. His posture screamed confidence. Mine screamed "please don't notice me."

That's when SHE walked past Court Four.

The sphinx. No one actually knew her name, but every freshman had a story about her cryptic wisdom. She'd been a senior forever, probably. She moved through the school like she knew secrets the rest of us were too young to understand.

She stopped. Looked right at me.

"Your hat," she said. "It's not lucky if you hide it."

Then she walked away, leaving behind what smelled like vanilla and something older, something like pages from a book that'd been read a thousand times.

"What does that even MEAN?" I whisper-yelled at Marisol.

She shrugged. "Everything's a riddle with that one. But maybe she's right? You've been trying to blend in since middle school. How's that working out?"

I pulled the crumpled fedora from my bag. It was ridiculous—honestly, who wears a fedora to sports tryouts? But it was mine. Something about the brim made me feel like I could step outside myself.

Jason (The Bull himself) swaggered over. "Freshman. You're up."

I put on the hat. It wasn't lucky. It wasn't magic. But it was mine.

"Bring it, Bull," I said, and for the first time, I didn't feel like a zombie going through the motions. I felt awake. I felt like someone who could figure out the riddle eventually.

Marisol wolf-whistled as I walked onto Court Four. The sphinx watched from the sidelines, barely smiling, like she'd known this was going to happen all along.
