The Sphinx of Center Field

Maya's mom had dropped off a papaya at lunch like it was some kind of exotic peace offering. "It's good for you, honey," she'd said, but Maya knew it was really an apology for missing the choir concert. Again. The fruit sat in Maya's backpack, growing heavier with every class, mocking her with its weird spotted skin.

Now she was at the baseball game, standing near the dugout where Lucas was warming up. Lucas, with his perfect swing and his perfect hair and his complete inability to notice Maya existed. She'd practiced what to say for three days in front of her bathroom mirror, but now her brain was empty.

"You gonna eat that?" A voice appeared beside her. Chloe, the senior shortstop, stood there with her cat hoodie and her reputation for knowing everyone's secrets. Chloe was like a sphinx - cryptic, kinda intimidating, and definitely knew something you didn't.

"What? Oh, the papaya." Maya's face burned. "My mom gave it to me."

Chloe raised an eyebrow. "A papaya. At a baseball game. That's... committed."

"I was gonna give it to Lucas," Maya admitted before she could stop herself. "Like, as a joke? Because he hit a home run last week and I thought..." Her voice trailed off. God, it sounded stupider out loud.

Chloe's cat-like eyes widened. "You were gonna flirt with Lucas using tropical fruit. Bold." She nodded slowly, considering. "Here's some sphinx wisdom for you, freshman: Lucas is allergic to basically everything, but he respects chaos energy."

"Chaos energy?"

"Case in point." Chloe pointed to the field, where Lucas's tabby cat had escaped from somewhere and was running loose between second and third base. The entire team was chasing it while the umpire looked like he was reconsidering every life choice.

Maya stared. "Is that his cat?"

"That's Bandit, yeah. And Lucas is definitely not gonna notice you unless you do something unforgettable." Chloe grabbed the papaya from Maya's hand. "Watch this."

"What are you—"

Chloe whistled, loud and sharp. Bandit the cat froze. Then she tossed the papaya onto the field, where it rolled dramatically toward home plate. The cat immediately abandoned the chase to investigate this strange new intruder, pawing at it like it was the most fascinating thing in the world.

The entire baseball field went silent. Then Lucas started laughing. Actually laughing, doubled-over, can't-breathe laughing. He looked up, still grinning, and spotted Maya and Chloe near the dugout.

"Did you guys bring a cat and a papaya to my game?" he called out. His eyes met Maya's, crinkling at the corners. "That's honestly iconic."

Chloe elbowed Maya. "Go talk to him, chaos queen."

Maya's heart was hammering, but she walked toward the field anyway. Sometimes the sphinx doesn't give you riddles. Sometimes she just throws fruit at your problems and hopes for the best.
