The Sphinx of Battery Park

Elena jogged past the bronze sphinx statue in Battery Park at 5:45 AM, her breath visible in the November chill. Running was the only time her mind stopped racing long enough for her to think clearly, which was unfortunate, because clarity was exactly what she'd been avoiding since the merger talks began three weeks ago.

Her iPhone buzzed against her arm—the encrypted messaging app she'd installed at Marcus's direction. *Package secured. Meet at 0800.*

Elena slowed to a walk, her chest tight. She was a senior analyst at Vanderlin Tech, with a corner office and stock options that should've made her feel grateful. Instead, she felt like a spy in her own life, stealing proprietary data for a competitor that had promised her a twenty percent raise and a fresh start somewhere no one knew her as 'the woman who almost blew the Birmingham deal.'

The dog—a golden retriever mix named Walter that belonged to the elderly couple in 4B—bounded toward her, tail wagging. Walter was the only living thing that looked at her without expectation. She knelt to scratch his ears, his warm weight grounding her in a way her therapist never could.

'You're a good boy, Walter,' she whispered. 'You don't care about fiduciary responsibility.'

Her phone vibrated again. Marcus this time: *Don't be late. This is bigger than us.*

Elena stood up, her knees popping, and watched the sun rise over the harbor. The sphinx stared back at her, its riddle eternal: what happens when you sell the pieces of yourself you can't buy back?

She opened the secure folder on her phone, hovered over the send button, and deleted everything. Then she called her boss.

'We need to talk about the Phoenix acquisition,' she said, her voice steadier than she felt. 'I've been approached by their team. I want to come clean.'

Walter barked, bouncing around her legs like she'd just done something worth celebrating. Maybe she had.
