The Sphinx in the Swimming Pool

Sophie was having a boring summer day. She was dangling her feet in her backyard pool, wishing something exciting would happen. Her dad had given her his old iPhone to play with, but even that wasn't fun anymore.

Suddenly, the water began to shimmer like glitter. A tiny creature no bigger than Sophie's hand popped up from the surface. It had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a human face - a miniature sphinx!

"Greetings, young one," squeaked the sphinx. "I am Zuri, guardian of the Pool of Wishes. I've been trapped here for one hundred years!"

Sophie's eyes went wide. "Are you magic?"

"Very much so!" Zuri fluttered her wings. "But I need your help to return home. First, you must pass three tests."

Sophie nodded eagerly. "I'm ready!"

"Test one," said Zuri, "takes courage beyond measure." She closed Sophie's palm and pressed it. A warm glow spread through Sophie's hand. When she opened it, a tiny glowing tablet sat there - not medicine, but a Vitamin of Bravery! "Take this, and you shall fear nothing."

The vitamin tasted like strawberry sunshine. Instantly, Sophie felt strong and brave.

"Test two," continued Zuri, "requires wisdom from afar." Sophie opened the iPhone, and suddenly it wasn't showing apps anymore - magical riddles appeared on the screen! Sophie solved them all, giggling at the tricky puzzles.

"The final test," whispered Zuri, "is the hardest. You must make a wish that helps someone else."

Sophie thought carefully. Then she smiled. "I wish that all children who feel lonely could find a magical friend like you!"

Zuri's eyes twinkled. "A beautiful wish!" The sphinx began to grow larger and brighter. "Thank you, Sophie. You have a brave heart and a kind soul."

With a burst of sparkles that smelled like coconut palms, Zuri soared into the sky and vanished.

But Sophie wasn't lonely anymore. Whenever she visited the pool, tiny magical fish would swim up to say hello. And sometimes, if she looked closely, she could see Zuri winking from the clouds, reminding her that courage and kindness were the real magic all along.
