The Sphinx in the Swimming Pool
Emma loved summer evenings by the pool. The water shimmered like liquid diamonds under the moonlight, and the air smelled of jasmine and chlorine. Tonight, something felt different.
She'd dropped her mom's old iphone near the pool edge, and as she reached for it, the water began to glow. Not just reflect – it actually glowed! Soft purple and blue lights danced beneath the surface, swirling like galaxies in a tiny ocean.
Emma gasped as a creature rose from the depths. It had the body of a golden lion and the face of a wise human, with enormous feathery wings that sparkled like morning dew. A sphinx! In her pool!
"Young friend," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes, "your phone called me. The magic inside remembers all the dreams humans share through screens. I am the Keeper of Forgotten Wishes."
Emma's eyes widened. "You grant wishes?"
"I guide dreamers to find their own magic," the sphinx smiled. "Tell me, what does your heart wish for?"
Emma thought hard. "I wish I wasn't afraid of the deep end. I wish I could swim like a mermaid."
The sphinx nodded wisely. "Courage is not the absence of fear. It's taking the next breath even when your heart races. Tonight, I will teach you that water holds you up when you trust it."
All summer, Emma visited the pool at moonrise. The sphinx taught her to float, to stroke, to trust the water. Each lesson came wrapped in riddles that made Emma giggle and think.
"What gets wetter the more it dries?" the sphinx asked one evening.
"A towel!" Emma shouted, splashing with excitement.
By summer's end, Emma swam like she'd been born to it. The sphinx appeared less often, but its final words stayed with Emma forever: "Magic isn't about changing reality – it's about seeing the wonder that's already there."
Now Emma swims fearlessly, knowing that courage and friendship are the real magic. And sometimes, when the moonlight hits the water just right, she still sees golden wings reflected in the ripples.
