The Sphinx in the Snapback

Maya's curls were doing that thing again—half-frizz, half-magic, and completely refusing to be tamed. She yanked her old snapback down lower, wishing she could just disappear into it like a turtle into its shell. This party was already giving her major anxiety vibes.

"You okay, Maya?" Jordan asked, sliding up beside her with a solo cup filled with something that looked suspiciously like papaya juice mixed with regret. "You look like you're about to bolt."

"I'm good," Maya lied, tucking a stray curl under her hat. "Just... observing."

"You've been observing for two hours," Jordan pointed out. "Live a little, yeah?"

Then Maya saw her—Leo, standing by the DJ booth like she owned the place. She had this incredible undercut design shaved into her hair, some kind of geometric pattern that caught every light. Meanwhile, Maya was over here feeling like a hot mess in a hat that had seen better days.

The thing was, Maya had been working on her own undercut design for weeks. A sphinx silhouette—mysterious, powerful, exactly who she wanted to be. But she'd been too scared to actually show anyone. Too scared to really be seen.

"Who's that?" Maya asked, nodding toward Leo.

"Leo? She's cool as hell. Plays guitar, does art, gives zero fucks what people think," Jordan said. "Why?"

Maya's heart did this weird fluttery thing. "No reason."

But then Leo caught Maya's eye and actually smiled. And not like one of those fake polite smiles—like a real one. Like she saw something worth seeing.

"Nice hat," Leo said, appearing seemingly out of nowhere. "Classic vibe."

"Thanks," Maya managed, her voice coming out squeaky. "It's... vintage."

"I bet what's under it's even better," Leo said with a wink, then just walked away to grab more papaya from the snack table like she hadn't just completely shattered Maya's entire worldview.

Jordan was practically vibrating beside her. "Did Leo just FLIRT with you?"

Maya took a deep breath, reached up, and pulled off her hat. Her curls sprang free, wild and imperfect and completely her. The sphinx design on her undercut caught the light—small but fierce.

"Bear with it," she told Jordan, using her older brother's favorite phrase when things got intense. "I think I'm about to actually talk to her."

"You're glowing, Maya," Jordan said. "Like, actually glowing."

Maybe she was. Maybe that's what happened when you finally stopped hiding and started living.
