The Sphinx in the Screen
Lily loved her new iPhone, especially the mystery game app. One evening, as she tapped the glowing screen, something strange happened. The swirly golden logo began to spin, faster and faster, until light spilled across her bedroom floor.
Barnaby, her golden retriever, perked up his ears and gave a curious woof.
From the screen stepped a magnificent creature—the Great Sphinx of Egypt, but tiny, no bigger than Lily's hand. His lion body gleamed like polished amber, and his human face was wise and kind.
"Greetings, young one," the Sphinx spoke in a voice like wind through desert palms. "I am Zephyr, keeper of ancient riddles. I have waited centuries for someone pure of heart to release me."
Lily's eyes widened. "You came from my iPhone?"
"Your device opened the gateway between worlds," Zephyr explained. "Your love for puzzles and your kind heart called to me across time."
Barnaby sniffed the tiny Sphinx carefully, then gave a gentle lick. Zephyr laughed, a sound like temple bells. "A noble guardian you have!"
"Will you stay?" Lily asked, hope rising in her chest.
"That," Zephyr said, eyes twinkling like stars, "depends on whether you can solve my riddle."
The Sphinx posed his challenge: "I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?"
Lily thought hard, her brow furrowing. Barnaby nudged her hand, as if encouraging her. Then it clicked—a smile spread across her face.
"A map!"
"Correct!" Zephyr declared, his lion tail swishing with delight. "You have proven yourself worthy. But alas, I must return to my temple. My people need me."
"But I'll miss you," Lily said softly.
"True friends are never truly apart," Zephyr promised. "Close your eyes and remember—magic lives wherever wonder dwells."
As the Sphinx stepped back into the iPhone screen, he left behind something special: Lily could now understand what Barnaby was thinking. And every night, she would solve puzzles with her dog, knowing that somewhere across time and space, a tiny Sphinx was doing the same, their friendship connecting them like an invisible thread of gold.
Lily learned that day that the best discoveries aren't found on any screen—they're found in an open heart.
