The Sphinx in the Pool
Lily loved summer evenings at the apartment complex. When most kids went inside for dinner, she stayed by the swimming pool, watching the water sparkle in the fading light.
One Tuesday, something strange happened. As Lily dangled her feet in the cool water, she noticed a shimmering shape beneath the surface. It wasn't a fish or a toy. It was something much bigger.
"Hello?" she whispered.
The shape rose slowly until a creature's head broke the surface. It had the face of a wise old woman but the body of a magnificent lion. Golden fur glistened with water droplets.
"I am Seraphina," the sphinx said, her voice like gentle ripples. "I've been stuck here for three hundred years."
"Why?" Lily asked, eyes wide.
Seraphina pointed a claw toward the edge of the pool. An old rusty cable peeked out from the bushes—the kind that used to connect televisions. "That cable was once part of a great spell. But it broke, trapping me in this pool. I can only leave when someone helps me fix it."
Lily's heart raced. "But I don't know magic!"
"You don't need magic," Seraphina smiled. "You need courage and kindness. Will you be my friend?"
Without hesitation, Lily nodded. She spent the next hour helping the sphinx weave the broken cable back together, following Seraphina's magical instructions. When the last connection was made, the cable began to glow.
Seraphina rose from the pool, her fur now dry and golden. She nuzzled Lily's cheek. "Thank you, little friend. Remember: the greatest magic isn't spells or enchantments. It's helping others, even when you're afraid."
Before disappearing into the night sky, Seraphina left behind a small golden scale. "Keep this, and I'll always be your friend."
That night, Lily fell asleep knowing that even ordinary places can hold extraordinary magic, especially when you're brave enough to be a friend to someone who needs one.
