The Sphinx in the Orange Tree
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's farm, especially the ancient orange tree that stood like a guardian in the backyard. Its leaves shimmered with magic, or so Grandmother claimed.
One afternoon, while peeling a perfect orange for a snack, Lily noticed something peculiar. A tiny creature, no bigger than her thumb, peeked from between the leaves. It had the body of a golden cat and small feathery wings — a miniature sphinx!
"Greetings, young human," the sphinx said in a voice like chimes. "I am Aurora, guardian of this magic tree. For three hundred years, I've watched children play, but none have seen me until now."
Lily's eyes widened. "Can I show you something?" She pulled out her iphone and opened a photo album. "This is my world."
Aurora gasped at the glowing screen. As Lily swiped through pictures — birthday parties, snowy mountains, her cat Mittens — the sphinx's wings fluttered with delight.
"Your world is so colorful!" Aurora exclaimed. "And yet, you came here instead of staying in your bright box. That tells me something important."
"What?" Lily asked.
"That you haven't forgotten how to wonder." Aurora's cat-eyes twinkled. "Many humans trade magic for screens, but you still see both."
Lily thought about this. "I like both — the iphone for memories, and the real world for making them."
"Wisdom in one so young!" Aurora did a joyful flip in the air. "For this, I grant you a gift." The sphinx blew a handful of orange blossom petals that swirled around Lily like a golden breeze. "Whenever you feel lonely, hold an orange, and I'll hear you. We'll be friends forever."
That day, Lily learned something wonderful: technology and magic aren't enemies. The best adventures happen when you keep your heart open to both the old magic and the new — and when you make friends in unexpected places.
