The Sphinx in the Orange Dress

Maya's hair had other plans. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to tame the frizzy explosion on her head, but between the humidity and her nerves, it had blossomed into a magnificent, uncontrollable halo. Great. Perfect. Exactly the vibe she wanted for her first high school formal.

"You look beautiful!" her mom insisted, pressing yet another chewable vitamin into her palm. "For energy! You'll need it!"

Maya swallowed the neon-orange tablet without protest. Her mom had been on a holistic health kick since Maya started high school, convinced that proper nutrition would solve everything from acne to social anxiety.

The real problem wasn't her hair though—it was the dress. An orange monstrosity she'd bought online because it looked "sunset golden" on the model. On Maya? It looked like a traffic cone had exploded at a formal event. But she couldn't return it. The tag said FINAL SALE in judgmental capital letters.

At lunch that day, she'd been so stressed about tonight that she'd barely touched her food—except for that moment when her crush Jake had walked by, and she'd panicked and shoved a massive spinach leaf in her mouth. He'd smiled. She'd smiled back. Then his best friend had whispered something, and they'd both burst out laughing.

"You have spinach in your teeth," her friend Chloe had hissed three minutes later.

Maya had wanted to evaporate. Instead, she'd spent the rest of the day running her tongue over every tooth like a forensic scientist.

Now, standing in her bedroom with her hair rebelling against gravity, wearing her orange dress, she felt like a joke. Her phone buzzed—a group chat where everyone was posting outfit pics. Everyone looked effortless. Everyone looked like they belonged.

Except her.

She almost texted that she was sick. Almost backed out. But then she remembered Mr. Henderson's world history class that morning, how they'd studied the Sphinx of Giza—that impossible, magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. How something could be both powerful and vulnerable, fierce and mysterious.

The Sphinx had stared down millennia with calm confidence. It didn't care what anyone thought.

Maya smoothed her dress. Let the hair do what it wanted. The orange was bold. The spinach incident was unfortunate but survivable. She'd show up. She'd dance badly and laugh about it. Maybe Jake would notice her, maybe he wouldn't.

She grabbed her phone and snapped a selfie. Hair wild, dress bright, smile genuine.
