The Sphinx in the Lobby

sphinxcablehat

The sphinx had been watching Elena for fifteen years.

Its granite eyes followed her from the marble lobby of the telecom giant where she'd spent two decades climbing ladders that led nowhere. Today, she stood before it at 5 PM, clutching a box with her framed MBA and a dying ficus.

"You never told me the answer," she whispered to the stone creature. The corporate art piece—some CEO's pretentious nod to wisdom—had become a weird comfort during late nights and early mornings.

The security guard, Carlos, smiled sadly. "Leaving us, Ms. Chen?"

She nodded. "The cable finally snapped."

Not literally. The光纤 cables in the server room hummed with business as usual, carrying millions of conversations, secrets, transactions. But the invisible cable tethering her to this place—to the endless meetings, to Marcus in Accounting with his wandering hands and wandering promises, to the memory of who she thought she'd become at forty-five—that one had frayed beyond repair.

Marcus had called her into his office yesterday. His prized fedora sat on his desk, crown carefully reshaped after each use, like the carefully constructed version of himself he presented to the world. He'd offered her a "special project" that required weekend work. His hand had lingered on her arm too long.

She'd walked out.

Now, outside the building, the city grayed toward dusk. She dropped her box. Something inside shifted—lighter, sharper.

Elena reached up and unpinned her hair. She hadn't worn it down since her first year as a junior analyst. It fell past her shoulders, unfamiliar and wild.

A young woman in a sharp blazer rushed past, clutching a coffee, eyes fixed on the revolving doors. Elena saw herself twenty years ago—hungry, certain, naive.

"Hey," Elena called. The young woman stopped. "The sphinx inside? It's just stone. Don't let it make you think you need to solve anything to belong here."

The woman blinked, then smiled. "Thanks?"

Elena picked up her box and walked toward the subway. Behind her, the sphinx watched the next generation arrive, while she finally became someone else.
