The Sphinx in the Kitchen

Maya leaned against the counter at Jason's house party, nursing a lukewarm soda and feeling like the world's biggest fraud. Everyone else was vibing, laughing, posting stories—but she was just waiting for the right moment to leave without looking like a total loser. Classic Maya behavior: overthinking everything, doing nothing.

That's when she saw it—the papaya. Someone's weird health-conscious mom had cut up this exotic fruit that looked like alien coral, and it sat there on a platter, completely ignored. Everyone was too busy with the pizza and chips. Maya reached for a piece, something different, something that said "I'm comfortable with who I am." Spoiler: she wasn't.

"You gonna eat that?"

Maya jumped. A black cat had materialized on the counter like it owned the place, yellow eyes fixed on her papaya.

"Back off," she whispered. "This is my personality piece."

The cat—clearly the real sphinx here—tilted its head like it understood everything. Like it knew Maya was lying about loving weird fruit just to seem interesting. Like it knew she'd cried in the bathroom earlier because her crush was dancing with someone else.

Then it clicked. The sphinx asked riddles to test worth, but maybe the real test was simpler: Stop performing. Stop pretending papaya was her favorite when she'd never even tasted it.

Maya took a bite. Made a face. Okay, gross.

The cat seemed to smile.

"Yeah, yeah, you knew," Maya laughed, actually laughed, and something in her chest loosened. She could go home. She didn't have to force this. Being fifteen didn't mean having everything figured out—it meant figuring out that papaya was gross and cats were better listeners than half the people at this party.

She slipped out the back door, cat watching from the window. Tomorrow she'd text Sarah about maybe hanging out just the two of them. Small steps. But tonight? Tonight she walked home feeling lighter, sphinx-riddle solved: fake it till you make it was trash advice. Just be the weirdo who hates papaya and likes cats. That was enough.
