The Sphinx in the Kitchen

Maya sorted the morning vitamins into their little compartments — his D3, her B-complex, the omega-3 they'd promised each other to take together. The ritual had become its own kind of lie, performed beside someone who'd already left in every way that mattered.

She watched from the window as a fox moved through the backyard garden, its coat bright against the dying winter grass. The animal stopped, looked directly at her with eyes that held all the knowledge she'd been avoiding: something had been gnawing at the foundation of this marriage for years, and she'd simply refused to see the hollowed-out spaces left behind.

'You're asking the wrong questions,' Daniel had said last night, not unkindly, when she'd finally asked about the late nights, the distance, the papaya he brought home instead of the mango she loved. 'You want riddles, Maya. Answers. But life isn't a sphinx with one secret truth to decode. It's just... decay and momentum.'

The papaya sat on the counter now, softening toward rot. She'd hated it at first bite — musky, insistent — but she'd eaten it anyway, had learned to swallow without tasting. Some part of her had believed this was what love required: the systematic erosion of her own preferences until she accommodated his without thought.

The fox trotted away with something in its mouth — one of their chickens, she realized too late. Not a metaphor. A real loss.

Daniel emerged from the bathroom, steam billowing behind him. He didn't notice the missing bird. He took his vitamins from her palm without meeting her eyes, their fingers barely touching.

'I'm leaving,' she said, and the ordinary words felt momentous, holy. 'Not the house. Just. This.'

He nodded, once. He'd known too. They'd both been waiting for the sphinx to tire of its own riddles.

Outside, the fox slipped into the woods. Somewhere, papaya trees grew in orchards she'd never see. She washed the vitamin taste from her mouth and watched the morning break, slowly and irreversibly, over everything.
