The Sphinx in the iPhone

Lily was a curious girl who absolutely hated spinach. "It's like eating leaves from the garden!" she would complain every dinner. But everything changed on a stormy Tuesday night when lightning flashed outside her window.

She was playing games on her iPhone when suddenly the screen glowed with golden light. A tiny sphinx — no bigger than her thumb — appeared right there on the glass! The sphinx had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and the face of a wise old man.

"I am Zephyr," the sphinx spoke in a voice like tiny chimes. "I've been trapped inside this phone for 1,000 years. Will you help me?"

Lily's eyes went wide. "But how?"

"Look at your goldfish bowl," Zephyr said.

Lily turned to see Bubbles, her ordinary orange goldfish, swimming in circles. But now Bubbles was glowing with rainbow colors!

"Bubbles is the keeper of the Golden Key," Zephyr explained. "But the key can only appear when someone shows kindness to the smallest things."

Lily thought hard. What could she do? Then she remembered her unfinished dinner. She carefully carried a piece of spinach to the fishbowl.

"Bubbles," she whispered, "you might like this more than I do."

As the spinach touched the water, Bubbles swam through it — and POOF! The goldfish transformed into a tiny golden key that floated in mid-air.

Zephyr flew out through the iPhone screen, caught the golden key, and grew to full size. "Thank you, Lily! You saved me by showing kindness even to something small as a fish and humble as a vegetable."

The sphinx tapped Lily's shoulder with his paw. Suddenly she could see magical creatures hiding everywhere: fairies in the flowers, dragons in the clouds, and mermaids in the ocean waves.

"True magic," Zephyr said, "is seeing the wonder in ordinary things — even in spinach."

Lily smiled. Maybe spinach wasn't so bad after all. And now, every time lightning storms came, she knew magical friends were near, waiting for anyone curious enough to find them.
