The Sphinx in the Gym

The gym smelled like floor wax and desperation. Homecoming week, and Tyler was stuck helping paint the senior float – basically social suicide for a sophomore who'd already accidentally worn his shirt inside out to first period.

"Yo Ty, you good?" Marcus asked, flicking paint onto Tyler's jeans.

"Yeah. Just thinking about how Mikey's been acting like a total bull lately," Tyler said, gesturing toward the varsity quarterback who was currently charging through the hallway like he owned the place. "Pushing freshmen into lockers? Not chill."

Marcus snorted. "Bro's just flexing for the scouts. Whole football team's on edge since Central lost last week."

Tyler's eyes drifted across the gym to where Chloe sat with her friends. She had this fox-like quality – sleek, observant, always knowing things before anyone else. Last week she'd predicted exactly which couples would break up before winter break. Tyler had been crushing on her since seventh grade when she'd defended him from some eighth-grade bully.

"Stop staring, you're being obvious," Marcus whispered.

"I'm not – "

"You literally are. Just go talk to her already."

"Right. Because 'hey, I've been silently watching you for three years' screams romance."

Suddenly, the gym doors banged open. Mr. Henderson, the weird history teacher who dressed like it was 1974, marched in carrying a massive cardboard box. "Attention students! Who can tell me what creature has the body of a lion, the head of a human, and asks riddles?"

The room went dead silent.

"A sphinx," Chloe called out, not even looking up from her phone.

"Correct!" Henderson dumped the box onto the gym floor. Out tumbled a fiberglass sphinx prop – missing both its front legs and half its face. "Homecoming committee found this in storage. We're repurposing it as this year's mascot theme because apparently our actual mascot isn't mysterious enough."

Mikey the bull marched over, smirk plastered on. "What is this? Some kind of joke?"

"It's ART, Michael," Henderson shot back. "Unlike your football plays, this requires actual thinking."

Chloe hopped off the bleachers and walked toward the mangled sphinx, pulling a compact mirror from her pocket. She caught Tyler's eye and motioned for him to come over.

His heart hammered against his ribs like he'd just chugged three energy drinks.

"Hey," she said, turning that fox-like intensity on him. "You're good at art, right? I've seen your sketches in English."

"Uh, yeah?"

"Help me fix this monstrosity. Henderson's gonna make us paint it for extra credit, and I'd rather die than let it look tragic." She grinned, and Tyler noticed the tiny freckles scattered across her nose like someone had flicked a paintbrush there. "Unless you're busy being a wallflower."

Something shifted in Tyler's chest. Maybe it was the way Mikey was still confused by the sphinx's missing nose. Maybe it was the way Marcus gave him a tiny thumbs-up from across the gym. Or maybe it was just that Chloe had noticed him – really noticed him – for the first time ever.

"I'm not busy," Tyler said, and for the first time all week, it wasn't a lie.

The bull charged on without him. The fox smiled like she'd known this was coming all along. And the sphinx sat there, missing its nose but somehow complete anyway.
