The Sphinx in the Corner Office

friendsphinxspybear

The brass sphinx sat on Elena's desk, its enigmatic smile mocking her as she packed her box. Eight years at the firm, reduced to cardboard and corporate betrayal.

"You're making a mistake," David said, leaning against her doorframe. He'd been her friend since they were both wide-eyed juniors, sharing takeout and dreams of partnership. Now he was the one who'd reported her 'concerning behavior' to HR.

She'd been the spy once—six months embedded in a competitor's team, extracting trade secrets while maintaining perfect cover. The irony wasn't lost on her. She'd returned a hero, promoted twice, trusted completely. Until she'd started asking questions about the Phoenix Project's offshore accounts.

"The sphinx doesn't speak," Elena said, running her finger over the cold brass. "It just watches. Like you."

David flinched. "They have evidence, El. Unauthorized access, deleted files—"

"Planted." She shouldered her bag. "And you know it."

The burden of discovery had been weighing on her since November—a bear of a secret she'd carried through holiday parties and performance reviews. The Phoenix Project wasn't just innovative software; it was a money-laundering operation with half the executive team implicated. She'd documented everything, building her case carefully.

She'd assumed David would help her expose it. Instead, he'd gone to the very people she'd been investigating.

"I have a family," he said quietly. "A mortgage."

"So did I." She didn't mention the miscarriage he knew about, the one that had left her hollowed out and questioning every choice she'd made. That wasn't leverage; it was just loss.

The elevator chimed. Her final ride down passed in silence, the sphinx still smiling in her memory, its riddle finally answered: trust no one, especially not those who hold your secrets.

Outside, the city sparkled with false promise. Elena adjusted her coat, already planning her next move. The SEC would be interested in her evidence. David would have to explain his silence when investigators came calling.

She'd survived being a spy in enemy territory. She'd survive being betrayed by a friend. But somewhere in the corporate towers above, the sphinx was waiting, and this time, Elena would be the one asking the questions.
