The Sphinx in the Corner

Maya's first day at Northwood High felt like walking into a pyramid scheme she hadn't signed up for. The social hierarchy was crystal clear: the varsity jacket crew at the top, theater kids forming their own exclusive layer, and everyone else scattered somewhere in the middle.

She'd barely survived homeroom when she spotted it— bald, wrinkly, and intensely staring from the back corner. A sphinx cat. The hairless creature was perched on what appeared to be a miniature pyramid of textbooks, watching everyone with those penetrating, almost judgmental eyes.

"That's Cleopatra," a girl whispered behind her. "Mr. Harrison's therapy pet. She's basically the mascot of outcasts here."

Maya couldn't help it—she cracked up. "A hairless cat named Cleopatra? That's literally the most on-the-nose thing ever."

The girl grinned. "I'm Riley. And yeah, the irony is not lost on anyone. You new?"

"Transfer," Maya said, feeling weirdly comfortable already. "My parents just moved from Chicago."

"Welcome to the pyramid," Riley said, gesturing at the cafeteria's social stratification. "Top tier sits by the windows. Bottom corner's for people who'd rather actually eat than perform social media content."

They ended up spending lunch period in the back corner, where Cleopatra the sphinx cat eventually deigned to accept their ear scratches. Something about that absurd little creature—so exposed, so unapologetically herself—made it easier to breathe.

"You know," Maya said, watching the cat curl into a perfect sphinx pose, "it's kind of iconic that she's just... out here living her best life. Like, no fur, no apologies."

Riley nodded. "Same energy, honestly. We should start a club. Hairless Cats and Social Anxiety."

"Only if we get jackets."

"Obviously."

When the bell rang, Maya caught herself actually smiling. The pyramid might still be terrifying tomorrow, but at least she'd found her corner.
