The Sphinx in the Cafeteria

Maya stared at the foreign object on her lunch tray. It looked like an alien melon that had seen better days. "That's papaya," said Liam, sliding onto the bench across from her. "My mom buys them, like, religiously. It's an acquired taste."

Maya's life had become a series of "acquired tastes" lately. New school. New expectations. The pressure to fit in while staying true to herself. She'd been bearing with it — mostly silently — since her parents' divorce sent her packing across the country three months ago.

"So," Liam continued, oblivious to her internal monologue, "you gonna try it? Or just stare at it like it's the Sphinx of Thebes and you're waiting for it to ask you a riddle?"

The Sphinx. That's what the theater department was building for the spring production. Ancient Egypt meets high school drama. Perfect.

"I'm thinking about it," Maya said, pushing the papaya wedge with her fork. The conversation spiraled to the usual lunchroom topics — Mr. Harrison's impossible physics test, the rumor about Jake and Sophia, the upcoming dance that everyone was already stressing about.

Then Chloe appeared. Maya's former best friend, now leader of the squad that had somehow decided Maya was persona non grata. Chloe sat at the next table, laughing too loudly at something someone said. Maya felt the familiar knot in her stomach.

"Why's she giving you the death stare?" Liam asked, nodding toward Chloe.

"Long story. Basically, I wouldn't bear false witness against some guy she liked, and suddenly I'm public enemy number one."

"That's rough." Liam poked at his own lunch. "You know what my grandma says? 'Sometimes you gotta chew through the spinach to get to the good stuff.'"

Maya snorted. "That's the worst metaphor I've ever heard."

"But is it though?" Liam grinned, and for the first time since she'd moved here, Maya felt something genuine. Real. Not performative. Not calculated for social approval.

She looked at the papaya. At Chloe's table. At Liam, who was genuinely trying to make her laugh. She picked up her fork and took a bite of the exotic fruit. Weirdly sweet. Sort of musky. Definitely an acquired taste.

"Well?" Liam raised an eyebrow.

"It's... interesting," Maya said. "I think I could get used to it."

"Good," Liam said. "Because next week, the cafeteria's serving mystery meat Monday, and you're gonna need a strong stomach for that."

Maya laughed. Maybe, just maybe, she could bear with this new life after all. Maybe new friends — and acquired tastes — weren't so bad. The Sphinx still loomed in her thoughts, riddles unanswered. But for now, the cafeteria was enough.
