The Sphinx in the Bathroom Mirror

sphinxfoxiphonerunning

Maya pressed her back against the cold tile of the girls' bathroom, heart still racing from PE class. That mile run. Again. Her legs burned like she'd been running for days, not just sixteen minutes around the track while Coach Miller yelled something about "digging deep" and "pushing through discomfort" that Maya definitely hadn't heard over the sound of her own heavy breathing.

Her iPhone buzzed against the sink where she'd abandoned it. The group chat was blowing up. It had been blowing up since second period.

"where r u???"

"alex is looking 4 u"

"OFC he is, ur wearing THAT hoodie"

"the FOX hoodie??? girl u are BALLSY"

Maya groaned and splashed cold water on her face. The hoodie in question was a vintage find she'd scored at Goodwill - oversized, covered in foxes. Retro foxes. Vintage vibes. It was supposed to be ironically cute, a whole aesthetic thing she'd spent way too much time curating on Pinterest. But now, with Alex Evans apparently looking for her, she just felt like a walking thrift store explosion.

Alex. The guy she'd been crushing on since seventh grade, who'd finally noticed her existence approximately three weeks ago at Jordan's Halloween party. Who'd texted her "u up?" at 11 PM last Saturday (she'd been up, obviously, but had waited exactly seventeen minutes to reply "hey" because that's what TikTok said was the right amount of cool. Seventeen minutes. Not fifteen, not twenty. Seventeen).

Now she was hiding in the bathroom like a middle schooler.

She stared at herself in the mirror. Mascara slightly smudged. Hair doing whatever it wanted today. This was it. This was high school's final boss moment. The moment every cringe teenage movie had prepared her for, except none of them had mentioned how badly your legs would hurt.

And suddenly, she got it. The sphinx. That stone creature with the human head and lion body, asking riddles that could destroy you if you answered wrong. Teenagers were basically all sphinxes - guarding themselves, making everything a test, daring you to fail. What do I wear? What do I say? Who do I sit with at lunch? What does this text mean? One wrong answer and the whole school ecosystem could collapse.

Or at least, your personal ecosystem.

The sphinx didn't ask easy questions. It asked the ones that mattered.

Her phone vibrated again, doing that little hop thing against the porcelain.

"maya??"

It was Alex. Direct message. Not the group chat. Not Jordan or Taylor being chaotic in all caps. Just Alex.

She stared at his name, fingers hovering over the screen, heart doing that stupid flutter thing that felt completely uncool and unironic. This sphinx wasn't asking "what walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?"

This sphinx was asking "are you brave enough to exist?"

Maya grabbed her backpack and pushed through the bathroom door, ignoring the two sophomore girls applying lip gloss who gave her that look. Her legs still burned from the mile run. Her fox hoodie was still aggressively retro and possibly a terrible choice. But she was done hiding.

The hallway was crowded, people rushing to lunch, calling to each other, the general roar of too many teenagers in one space. Alex stood by her locker, looking around like he was searching for something. Actually searching for her.

He spotted her. His face lit up.

"There you are."

Maya walked toward him, ready for whatever riddle came next.
