The Sphinx in the Basement

papayacablefoxsphinx

Maya's first real party. Her phone buzzed with texts from friends who bailed, and now she's stuck in a stranger's basement, nursing a papaya-infused punch that tastes like sunscreen and regret. The Spotify playlist keeps cutting out because someone kicked the loose HDMI cable, and every time the music dies, conversation screeches to a halt.

She's supposed to be having the time of her life. Instead, she's calculating escape routes and wondering if it's too late to fake a family emergency.

"You look like you're solving world peace," says a voice beside her.

Maya turns. It's the guy who'd been sitting on the couch earlier, the one everyone kept calling 'fox' because of his copper hair and sly smile. Now he's close enough that she can see the freckles across his nose.

"Just wondering if the punch is lethal," she says, which is smoother than she feels.

He laughs, and it's actually genuine. "It's lethal to your dignity, maybe. I'm Leo."

"Maya."

They stand there as the music glitches again, and suddenly she's telling him about her anxiety, about how she feels like everyone else got a handbook on Being A Teenager that she missed. Leo nods like he understands, like this isn't weird to confess to a stranger at a party.

"My cat's name is Sphinx," he says out of nowhere. "Because she sits on my chest at 3 AM staring into my soul like she knows secrets."

Maya laughs before she can stop herself, and it's the first real thing she's felt all night.

They spend the next hour talking about everything and nothing—why papaya is a controversial fruit, how to fix the cable properly so the music stays on, what it means to feel like you're performing your own life. When her friends finally text that they're coming to rescue her, Maya almost says never mind.

Later, walking home under streetlights, Maya realizes something: maybe there is no handbook. Maybe everyone's just winging it, even the foxes and the sphinxes and the people who seem like they have it figured out.

She checks her phone. Leo's number is there, along with a text: sphinx says you're cool.

Maya grins at the screen. The party wasn't a disaster after all. Sometimes the best moments happen when the music cuts out and you're forced to actually talk to people.

Sometimes you find your people in the most unexpected places.
