The Sphinx in the Basement

Maya's older sister's house party thumped upstairs while she hid in the basement, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The charging cable was frayed at the end, exposing copper wire that threatened to shock her if she moved wrong. Classic.

"You gonna come up or what?" Ethan leaned against the doorframe, looking annoyingly comfortable in his flannel. Maya had been crushing on him since seventh period English, when he'd made that actually funny joke about The Great Gatsby.

"In a minute," Maya lied, popping another gummy vitamin from her sister's stash. Maybe B12 would give her the courage to exist in the same room as popular people.

Ethan sat beside her on the dusty couch. "You know your sister has, like, a literal sphinx statue in the corner? It's kinda low-key terrifying."

Maya laughed despite herself. "That's ancient Egypt core aesthetic. She's going through a phase."

"What phase are you going through?" Ethan asked, unexpectedly genuine.

Maya's stomach did that nervous flip thing. "The phase where I hide in basements at parties."

"Same," Ethan said. "I was literally in the bathroom for twenty minutes pretending to fix my hair."

They sat there while the bass vibrated through the floorboards, two awkward people avoiding the chaos upstairs. Maya's water bottle sat between them, sweating condensation onto the concrete. She offered it to him. He accepted, their fingers brushing.

"Thanks."

"No problem."

The sphinx statue watched them from the corner, stone face frozen in that mysterious half-smile. And somehow, in this dusty basement with a frayed charging cable and a bottle of water, Maya felt more herself than she had all night.

"Wanna stay down here?" she asked. "Forever?"

Ethan grinned. "Absolutely. I'll build us a pillow fort."

And that was how Maya accidentally made her first real friend at a party where she'd planned to make zero friends. The sphinx would be proud.
