The Sphinx in Room 304

Maya's lucky beanie sat crooked on her head, hiding the worst case of hat hair she'd ever had. First period English, and she'd already tripped over some random cable in the hallway, dropping her phone for everyone to see.

"You good?" asked Lucas, the cute junior who sat behind her. He was wearing that vintage jacket everyone wanted.

"Totally," Maya said, though she definitely wasn't. Her hands shook as she pulled out her essay. Today was presentation day, and Ms. Patel had assigned them "identity riddles" inspired by mythology. Maya had drawn the sphinx card.

"What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?" Maya read, her voice barely steady. "The answer is... a person. We crawl as babies, walk as adults, and use canes when we're old."

She paused. This wasn't the riddle she'd prepared. This was something else entirely—something about how we're all riddles to ourselves, changing as we grow.

"But the real question, " Maya continued, her voice gaining strength, "is what walks on two legs but feels like they're walking on none sometimes? What sits in a classroom wearing a hat to hide their hair because they're scared people will see them as anything other than confident?"

Lucas looked up. The room went quiet.

"A teenager, " Maya said. "Someone in the middle of their own story, figuring out who they're becoming."

When she finished, Lucas actually clapped. "That was... actually deep. "

"Thanks, " Maya said, finally fixing her hat. For the first time all morning, she didn't feel like tripping over anything—cables or her own nerves. Maybe high school wasn't one giant riddle she had to solve alone.

Maybe it was okay to still be figuring out the answer.
