The Sphinx in My Palm

Lily discovered the tiny sphinx statue while digging in her grandmother's garden. It was no bigger than a walnut, with detailed lion paws and a mysterious face. When she placed it carefully in her palm, something magical happened – the sphinx blinked!

"Greetings, young friend," the sphinx said in a voice like rustling leaves. "I've been sleeping in this garden for three hundred years."

Lily's cat, Muffin, came running across the grass, chasing a butterfly. When she saw the talking sphinx, Muffin froze, her tail puffed up like a dandelion.

"Don't be frightened," Lily whispered, stroking Muffin's soft fur. "This is magic."

"Indeed," said the sphinx. "And I need your help. My sister sphinx lives in the goldfish pond across the garden. She's been turned into a fish by a grumpy wizard! Only a true friend can break the spell."

Lily's eyes widened. Her own goldfish, Finny, had always seemed special. Was Finny actually a sphinx too?

"Take me to see Finny," Lily said, cupping the sphinx gently in her palm.

Muffin led the way, running toward the garden pond where Finny swam in circles. As soon as the sphinx spoke an ancient word, Finny began to glow. Golden light filled the pond, and suddenly a second tiny sphinx stood on a lily pad!

"Thank you!" Finny's sphinx sister exclaimed. "The wizard's spell is broken because you believed in magic."

"Will you stay with us?" Lily asked.

Both sphinxes shook their lion heads. "We belong to the garden now. But whenever you need wisdom or adventure, just place your hand on the earth and call us. We'll be there."

That night, as Lily fell asleep, she smiled. Some people said sphinxes only existed in Egypt. But Lily knew better – magic could be found anywhere, even in the palm of your hand.
