The Sphinx in My Bedroom

The midnight blue hair dye stained my mom's pristine white sink like a crime scene. Perfect.

My iPhone lay face-down on the counter, screen shattered from dropping it during cheer tryouts last week - tryouts I'd deliberately bombed because who was I kidding? Not exactly cheerleader material with my anxiety and love for obscure mythology podcasts.

"Maya? Everything okay in there?" Mom's voice through the door.

"Fine!" I called back, staring at my reflection. The blue hair made me look like someone I'd actually want to hang out with. Someone confident.

That's when I saw it - a sphinx moth hovering near the window, drawn by the porch light. Its wings were impossibly intricate, like something that shouldn't exist in suburbia. I'd been obsessed with sphinx mythology since sixth grade, when I'd given that presentation on Egyptian riddles while everyone else did careers. The sphinx guarded secrets, asked impossible questions. I had plenty of those.

I opened the window and it drifted in, landing on my bookshelf beside Tank, my pet goldfish who'd survived three moves and my clumsy feeding habits. Tank swam in endless circles, trapped in his glass world while I was trapped in expectations I'd never signed up for.

My charging cable - the one I'd had to wrap in electrical tape because I was too broke to replace it - snaked across the floor. I'd spent hours hiding in my room, doom-scrolling through everyone else's perfect lives while mine felt like a series of awkward moments.

The sphinx moth's wings caught the light, iridescent and completely unapologetic.

Something shifted. I grabbed my phone and opened the group chat - the one where I usually just lurked while everyone made plans I wasn't invited to.

"Who wants to sneak out tonight?" I typed. "I know a spot."

Three bubbles appeared immediately. Then: "Since when do YOU sneak out? Blue Maya is wild lol."

I smiled at my reflection. Maybe sphinxes weren't just about riddles. Maybe they were about transformation. About becoming something else entirely.

"Since now," I wrote back. "Pick you up at midnight."
