The Sphinx in My Bedroom

vitaminsphinxcat

Maya's mom stood in the doorway, vitamin bottle in hand like it was some magical elixir that could fix everything. "You need these," she insisted, sliding the orange container across Maya's desk. "For your skin, for your energy, for... everything."

Maya rolled her eyes so hard it practically hurt. Freshman year was already a disaster without her mom's daily wellness interventions. The acne, the awkward growth spurt, the feeling that everyone else had received some secret manual on how to be cool while she was still reading the introduction.

Then there was Luna, her sister's sphinx cat, now somehow Maya's responsibility after Chloe abandoned them for college. A hairless, wrinkly creature that looked like something that had been left in the dryer too long. Maya's friends had giggled when they first saw Luna peeking from her backpack during their FaceTime call.

"That cat is literally you," her best friend Priya had said.

Maya didn't know whether to be offended.

That night, Maya sat on her bed, Luna curling into her lap like a warm, naked potato. The cat's huge ears twitched at every sound, her lemon-shaped eyes staring with ancient wisdom. Something about those eyes—so unashamedly bare, so completely unconcerned with appearances—made Maya's chest feel tight.

She grabbed the vitamin bottle. Empty. She'd been taking them for months, and what had changed? Nothing. She was still waiting to become someone else, someone better.

Luna yawned, stretching her wrinkly body, completely at peace in her alien skin.

The realization hit Maya like a splash of cold water: maybe that was the point. Luna wasn't hiding. Luna wasn't waiting to be born with fur. Luna was just... existing.

Maya set the empty bottle on her nightstand and leaned back, letting the strange, wonderful sphinx-cat warmth seep into her bones. Tomorrow she'd walk into school without foundation. Tomorrow she'd wear that vintage dress she loved but never had the guts to wear. Tomorrow, she'd stop waiting for the vitamins to kick in and just be the weird, beautiful creature she already was.
