The Sphinx Holds Its Secrets

The padel ball cracked against the glass wall, echoing across the resort. Elena wiped sweat from her brow, her eyes never leaving the pyramid-shaped hotel towering against the desert sunset. The Luxor Conference Center—where in three hours, she'd either secure the breakthrough that saved her career or watch it collapse like sand through fingers.

"You're gripping too tight," said Fox, her opponent for the evening match. Maya Fox, thirty-four, sharp features inherited from her Egyptian mother, suspiciously adept at corporate espionage. They'd met at last year's Basel summit, where Maya had walked away with the defense contract Elena had spent months cultivating.

"I don't grip," Elena served, the ball spinning viciously. "I execute."

They played in silence, the rhythm of their game a conversation of movement and anticipation. Beyond the court, the stone sphinx watched with its eternal, inscrutable smile—the same statue where, two nights ago, Elena had been approached with an offer: sell out her firm for triple her current salary, or watch as evidence of her past as a corporate spy leaked to the press.

She'd spent twenty years building trust, eight of them deep undercover in competitors' boardrooms. Now one person held the power to dismantle it all.

The match ended 6-4, Fox's favor. They met at the net, shook hands.

"You're distracted," Maya said, studying her. "The Egyptian deal—it's not what you think."

Elena froze. "What do you know?"

"That your firm's been selling classified tech to the same government you're supposedly negotiating with. You're not closing a deal, Elena. You're being set up to take the fall."

The sphinx seemed to mock her from across the court.

"Why tell me?"

Maya's expression softened. "Because last year in Basel, you could have destroyed me. You had the proof, the leverage. You didn't use it."

"That wasn't mercy. That was—"

"Honor. I know." Maya handed her a phone. "The real buyer's list. Who's actually behind the pyramid scheme. You have a choice, Elena."

She walked away, leaving Elena with the device that contained everything needed to burn the lie to ash.

The sphinx smiled. The pyramid gleamed gold in the dying light. And somewhere in the distance, a fox called out across the desert—a warning, or an invitation.

Elena made her call.
