The Sphinx Hat Redemption

Maya's mom insisted the Egypt-theme party would be "lit." Maya stood in the bathroom, adjusting the papier-mâché sphinx on her head. A sphinx wearing a baseball cap—so not the vibe.

"You look amazing, mija!" her mom called.

Maya grabbed her phone. Twelve texts from Mia: *where r u?? everyone's here*

The pyramid of red cups in the corner towered over the kitchen island. Tyler—the boy she'd been lowkey crushing on for months—stood near it, laughing with his friends. His bear hoodie was cute, honestly. But Maya felt ridiculous.

Then she saw Jasmine, the queen bee of sophomore year, holding court like she owned the place. Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like gravity had turned up to 200%.

"Nice hat," Jasmine said, not even trying to hide the smirk. Her friends giggled.

The room went quiet. Maya's face burned. She should've just stayed home. Should've declined the invitation. Should've—

"Actually," Tyler's voice cut through the awkward silence, "it's pretty sick."

Everyone turned. He walked over, giving Maya a once-over that felt way less judgmental than she expected. "Like, obviously. The riddle thing? Sphinx is the OG of mystery vibes."

Maya blinked. "Oh. Uh, yeah?"

"Totally." He grinned. "Wanna play beer pong? I need someone who can actually aim."

Jasmine's smirk faltered. Maya's confidence leveled up.

"Bet," Maya said, and the word felt foreign but good on her tongue.

As they set up the cups, Tyler leaned in. "Jasmine's been on a warpath all night. Don't let her get in your head."

Maya adjusted her sphinx hat. It suddenly felt less like a costume and more like armor.

"Bull don't scare me," she said, surprising herself. Then she laughed. "I mean, you know. The bad kind."

Tyler laughed too. It was a good sound. Real.

"Whatever you say, Sphinx Girl." He winked. "Your shot."
