The Sphinx Cat Who Saved My Social Life

I was definitely not running for student council president—that was Maya's brilliant idea, not mine. But somehow I found myself sprinting down the sophomore hallway, late for the debate club meeting that would supposedly launch my political career.

"You're welcome for the campaign strategy!" Maya called after me, already scrolling through Instagram like she hadn't just ruined my life.

The debate room was packed. Of course Ethan was there, leaning against the whiteboard like he owned the school and everyone in it. My stomach did that embarrassing thing where it forgets how to be an organ.

"Glad you could join us, Mr. President," he said, and everyone laughed. Even me, because that's what you do when you're crashing and burning socially.

But then I saw HER. Chloe, the junior who wore combat boots with everything and had this mysterious aura that made everyone want to know her. She was sitting in the back, not paying attention to anyone.

I'd been trying to talk to her for weeks. Two weeks ago, I'd literally practiced conversation starters in my bathroom mirror. My little sister walked in, asked why I was talking to myself, and I told her I was rehearsing for a play. She nodded like she believed me, which she definitely didn't.

After the meeting, I found Chloe outside on the quad. She was taking pictures of something on her phone.

"Is that..." I started, then immediately regretted speaking.

She looked up, and her face lit up. "You like cats?"

I followed her gaze to the weirdest creature I'd ever seen—a hairless, wrinkled cat sitting regally on a bench like it was waiting for worshippers.

"That's a sphinx cat," she said, crouching down to let it sniff her fingers. "Her name's Cleo, and she's basically my emotional support animal."

"She's... interesting," I managed, which was the understatement of the century. The cat looked like a tiny alien philosopher.

"You want to pet her?" Chloe asked, and something about her tone made it feel like a test.

I hesitated. sphinx cats were intense. But I also really, really wanted to not make things weird.

"Sure," I said, sitting beside her. Cleo immediately climbed onto my lap and started purring like a tiny motor.

"She likes you," Chloe said, sounding surprised. "She usually hates everyone."

We spent the next twenty minutes talking about everything and nothing—her cat, my fake political career, how much we both hated gym class. By the time the bell rang, I'd somehow promised to help her study for AP History.

"Same time tomorrow?" she asked.

"Definitely," I said.

As I walked to my next class, Maya texted me: how'd it go??

I didn't answer. Some things you don't put in a group chat.

Later that night, I googled sphinx cats. Turns out they're supposed to be hypoallergenic, which is why Chloe's mom let her get one. But I also learned that sphinx cats are known for being super social and affectionate, basically the opposite of what you'd expect from something that looks so intense.

I thought about how I'd spent weeks trying to come up with the perfect thing to say to Chloe, practicing lines in my mirror and overanalyzing every interaction. And then I accidentally became friends with her because of a weird naked cat.

Sometimes the best things happen when you're not running toward them or away from them. They just happen while you're busy being late and unprepared.

The next day, Chloe brought Cleo back to the same bench. This time, I brought snacks.

"You're officially her favorite human now," Chloe said as Cleo abandoned her for my lap.

"Sorry not sorry," I said, and we both laughed.

Maya found us there during lunch. "OH MY GOD IS THAT A SPHINX CAT?" she practically yelled. "I'm Instagramming this RIGHT NOW."

"Maya, no," I said, but Chloe was already posing for the photo.

"It's fine," Chloe whispered. "She's kind of iconic anyway."

And yeah, maybe the cat was iconic. But I was starting to think the person holding her might be too.
