The Sphinx Cat Knew Everything

Finals week turned me into a total zombie. I was shambling through homeroom, dead inside, surviving on vending machine caffeine and pure anxiety. My friend group felt like it was ghosting me too—Maya was obsessed with her new boyfriend, and Marcus was deep in his gaming phase. Typical high school drift, but it hit different when you're already feeling like the walking dead.

Then my aunt called. House-sit for the weekend, she said. Easy money, she said. She failed to mention her pets.

The dog—Buster, a chaotic golden retriever with zero chill—knocked me over the moment I walked in. Meanwhile, the sphinx cat, a wrinkly hairless wonder named Pharaoh, perched on the back of the sofa, judging my entire existence with those alien eyes.

I spent Saturday night doom-scrolling while Buster demanded walks and Pharaoh stared at me like he knew my secrets. Weirdly? I started talking to him. Like, actual conversations. 'So Pharaoh, what do I do about my friend group falling apart?' The cat just blinked, slowly.

By Sunday, something shifted. Buster's enthusiasm was kinda infectious. Pharaoh's silent judgment helped me think. I realized my friends weren't ghosting me—they were just living their lives, and I was too busy being a zombie to actually reach out.

I texted Maya and Marcus. 'Let's get boba after school. My treat.'

They replied instantly. A string of crying-laughing emojis and 'finally' vibes.

Monday morning, I wasn't a zombie anymore. Buster had slobbered on my favorite hoodie, Pharaoh had silently witnessed my entire breakdown, and somehow—I had my people back. Sometimes the weirdest weekends teach you the most real stuff. That sphinx cat? He knew everything.
